About The Programme

What is Stepping On?

Stepping On is a falls prevention program developed right here in Australia and now run in communities across the country. It’s for older adults who are living independently and want to feel steadier on their feet — whether they’ve had a fall before, or simply want to avoid one.

Small groups meet once a week for seven weeks, for a friendly two-hour session covering gentle exercise and practical, everyday advice. A trained facilitator runs each session, often joined by guest speakers such as physiotherapists, pharmacists and vision specialists. About two months after the program finishes, the group comes back together for a booster session to keep new habits going strong.

Stepping On has been tested in a randomised controlled trial and shown to reduce falls by 31% among older people living at home. It’s been delivered across NSW as part of the Active and Healthy healthy ageing initiative since 2008.
